During the July 10, 2013 Londonderry Planning Board Hearing, board members conditionally approved the Town’s first workforce housing project, featuring a total of 95 units on over 20 acres of land off Mammoth Road. The plans include adding another 11 units to the already built 6 located on Trail Haven Drive, as well as building a new road, named Whittemore Road, just north of Trail Haven Drive.
According to the plans, presented by Earl Blatchford of Hayner/Swanson, Inc, of Nashua, the units would be two-story townhouse style rental units and would be built in two phases. On Trail Haven Drive, phase two involves building an additional four buildings to the preexisting units. These new buildings consist of a community building, a 5-unit building, a 4-unit building, and a 2-unit building.
On Whittemore Road, the first phase involves building a 900-foot roadway, six buildings featuring 38 units, and a 1,000-square foot community building. The second phase would add 300 feet of roadway and a cul de sac, the remaining six buildings featuring 40 units, and parking spots.
Once completed, the Whittemore Road development will feature 168 parking spaces, including several handicapped spots, sidewalks, crosswalks, and greenery, including trees, shrubs, and “one purple lilac plant per building,” according to Blatchford.
All plans were conditionally approved and board members noted that this is the first time a workforce housing project in Londonderry had made it that stage of the process.
